BALTIMORE - Barbara A. Dworetzky, M.D., has been elected to the American Epilepsy Society
(AES) board of directors beginning at the conclusion of the Society's annual meeting in
Baltimore (Dec. 6-10, 2019). A medical and scientific society of more than 4,200 members,
the AES is dedicated to advancing research and education for preventing, treating and curing
epilepsy.
Dr. Dworetzky is chief of the Division of Epilepsy and director of the Edward B. Bromfield
Epilepsy Center at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital and professor of neurology at Harvard
Medical School in Boston. Her research interests focus on psychogenic nonepileptic seizures
and education.
Dr. Dworetzky has served on numerous AES councils and committees including as chair of the
Council on Clinical Activities (2015-2017), chair of the Practice Management Committee
(2011-2013), a member of the Treatments Committee (2011-2017), the Needs Assessment and
Educational Outcomes Task Force (2019) and as the AES member representative to the
Epilepsy Leadership Council (2017-2020). She also serves on the Planning Committee for the
newly founded International Functional Neurologic Disorders Society (FNDS) and is a member
of the American Academy of Neurology, the American Neurological Association and the
Epilepsy Learning Health System.
Dr. Dworetzky earned her medical degree from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine,
Bronx, New York and completed her residency at the Harvard—Longwood Neurology Training
Program in Boston. She then completed a two-year fellowship in clinical neurophysiology and
epilepsy at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital under the mentorship of Dr. Edward B.
Bromfield. She graduated Magna Cum Laude with Honors in psychology from Brown University
in Providence, Rhode Island.
